How We Boosted Company Turnover for a Motor Dealership – William’s Story
Introduction
William (not his real name) knew vans inside out. After years in the motor trade, he set up his own commercial vehicle dealership selling vans to tradespeople and small businesses. He had good stock, fair prices and a reputation for honest dealing.
Customers kept coming through the door, but turnover was stuck at around £216k. William couldn’t work out why. People liked the vans and agreed on the price, then left saying they’d “sort out the money” but never came back.
Frustrated, he turned to Josef, his Virtual Finance Director (VFD), and asked, “I need to turn all these enquiries into actual sales, but how?”
Situation
William’s business had plenty of interest, but it was losing sales at the final step:
- Customers couldn’t pay upfront. Most of his buyers were builders, plumbers and electricians who needed a van to earn a living but didn’t have thousands in cash.
- Competitors were winning the deals. Larger dealers offered finance on the spot, so William’s customers often bought from them instead.
- Part-exchanges were a headache. Many customers still owed money on their current van, which made trading it in difficult.
- Growth had stalled. However hard William worked, turnover stayed flat.
William had the stock and the customers. What he lacked was a way to help them buy.
Obstacles
With his experience in this sector, Josef quickly saw that offering finance was the answer, but this would be a journey rather than a single fix. There were two major stages to get through.
Stage one: FCA registration
- Authorisation. Arranging finance for consumers and sole traders is a regulated activity, so William needed authorisation from the Financial Conduct Authority before he could offer it.
- Choosing the right permissions. Applying for the wrong permissions causes delays. William needed cover for credit broking, consumer hire and settling outstanding finance on part-exchange vans.
- Getting the numbers right. The FCA asks for projected income from regulated activities. That means the commission earned, not the value of vans sold, and it’s an easy thing to get wrong.
- Compliant marketing. Every mention of finance, in the showroom, online or in adverts, had to meet the FCA’s financial promotion rules (CONC 3).
Stage two: winning over the lenders
- Lender approval. FCA authorisation was only the licence to trade. William still needed banks and finance companies willing to accept business from him, and each one had its own approval process.
- No track record. As a newly authorised broker, William had no history with lenders. Many were cautious about taking on a small dealership.
- Uncompetitive rates at first. The first lenders to sign up mostly offered rates that suited customers with weaker credit histories. Customers with good credit ratings expected cheaper finance than William could offer at the start, and some went back to their own bank or to larger dealers who could beat his rates.
Unless William could build a wider range of lenders, he risked losing the very customers who were easiest to finance.
Action
Josef guided William through both stages:
FCA registration, the first step
✔ Built the business case. Calculated how many lost sales could be won back by offering finance and what that would mean for turnover and profit.
✔ Prepared the FCA application. Brought together the business plan, William’s personal details as an approved person, policies and supporting documents, following the FCA’s checklist.
✔ Secured the right permissions. Worked with the FCA case officer to confirm limited permission for credit broking, plus debt adjusting (so William could settle existing finance on part-exchange vans) and consumer hire.
✔ Produced realistic forecasts. When the FCA asked how William’s income projection had been calculated, Josef helped restate it on the correct basis: commission on around £250,000 of additional sales at 5.5%, growing by about 20% a year.
✔ Made the marketing compliant. Checked showroom materials, website content and adverts against CONC 3 so that every finance message was clear, fair and not misleading.
Building lender relationships
✔ Prepared William for lender approval. Put together the financial information, compliance documents and business case that banks and finance companies needed when deciding whether to take him on.
✔ Started with lenders willing to say yes. Got finance in the showroom as quickly as possible, even though the first rates weren’t always the most competitive.
✔ Built a track record. Made sure every deal was well documented and compliant, so William could show lenders he was a reliable, low-risk broker.
✔ Widened the lender panel over time. Used that growing track record to win approval from more mainstream banks and finance houses with cheaper rates for customers with good credit.
✔ Matched customers to the right lender. With a broader panel, William could offer each customer a deal that suited their credit profile, whether they were a prime borrower or needed more flexible terms.
✔ Built finance into the sales process. Made sure every customer was offered a monthly payment option alongside the cash price.
Result
✅ FCA authorisation secured. William could now legally offer finance directly to his customers.
✅ Strong lender relationships. What started with a handful of lenders grew into a panel of banks and finance companies willing to back William’s customers.
✅ Competitive rates for every customer. Customers with good credit could now get the cheaper finance they expected, so William stopped losing them to their own bank or larger dealers.
✅ Enquiries turned into sales. Customers who would once have walked away could now drive off in a new van the same day.
✅ Easier part-exchanges. Settling outstanding finance meant customers could trade in vans that still had money owing.
✅ A new income stream. Finance commission added a second source of revenue on top of vehicle margins.
✅ Major growth. Alongside other strategies Josef put in place, offering finance helped take turnover from £116k to £3.6 million.
Conclusion
William had always assumed the answer was more stock, more advertising or longer hours. His customers wanted to buy and simply needed a way to pay. Josef showed him that the problem wasn’t demand but conversion.
FCA registration was the first milestone, but it wasn’t the finish line. The real test came in winning the trust of banks and finance companies. In the early days, William sometimes watched customers with good credit walk away because he couldn’t yet match the rates they expected. Josef helped him treat each deal as part of building a reputation, and that patience paid off as more lenders came on board and his rates became truly competitive.
Instead of watching customers walk out of the door, William could now say yes to almost anyone. That journey from registration to a full panel of lenders helped turn a small trading business into a £3.6 million dealership built on a compliant and sustainable footing.
Could this work for your business?
Do you sell high-ticket items such as fit-outs, shopfitting, vehicles, machinery, equipment, furniture or home improvements? If so, you may be losing sales for the same reason William was. Your customers want to buy but can’t find the full amount upfront.
Offering finance could help you:
✔ Win more sales without cutting your price. Customers who can spread the cost are much less likely to haggle or walk away.
✔ Close deals on the spot. Your customers buy from you there and then, not after they’ve gone off to sort out funding.
✔ Earn extra income. Finance commission gives you a second revenue stream on top of your margin.
✔ Compete with bigger players. Offer the same convenience as larger competitors while keeping your personal service.
Getting there takes more than an application form. You need the right FCA permissions, compliant marketing and solid relationships with the right lenders. That’s where Josef can help.
