Making Tax Digital (MTD) Expands
The rollout of MTD for Income Tax will be expanded to include a wider range of small businesses and will operate as follows:
- It will start from April 2026 for sole traders and landlords with qualifying incomes over £50,000.
- It will extend to those with qualifying incomes over £30,000 in April 2027.
- It will extend again to those with qualifying incomes over £20,000 from April 2028.
- Enhanced penalties for late VAT & tax payments incoming from April 2025.
Business & Employer Impacts
- Employer NICs rise from 13.8% to 15% (April 2025).
- Employment Allowance doubles to £10,500—broadening eligibility.
- FHL regime abolished from April 2025—watch for CGT & pension implications.
- National Living Wage (NLW) and National Minimum Wage (NMW) which will come into force from 1 April 2025. The rates: Apprentices £7.55, 16-17 years old: £7.55, 18-20 years old: £10.00, NMW £12.21.
Company Cars & Vans
- BIK rates for company cars rise in 2025/26:
